NEW YORK (Reuters) – Amgen Inc pleaded guilty in a New York federal court on Tuesday for improper marketing practices involving its once top-selling Aranesp anemia drug and agreed to pay $762 million in a civil settlement and criminal fines. The world’s largest biotechnology company had previously set aside funds it expected to have to pay as a result of federal and state investigations, as well as nearly a dozen civil whistleblower lawsuits. . . .

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – After making major concessions on long-held "fiscal cliff" positions, President Barack Obama and House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner will test the reaction Tuesday of their respective parties in the U. S. Congress and continue talks aimed at further narrowing their differences. The effort is designed to avert the steep tax hikes and across the board spending cuts set to take effect unless a deal is enacted into law before December 31. NEW YORK (Reuters) – Biotech company Amgen Inc is scheduled to plead guilty on Tuesday in a criminal case in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, prosecutors said. A brief statement from the U. S. Attorney’s office gave no details of the charges Amgen would plead guilty to. Representatives of Amgen could not immediately be reached to comment on the subject matter of the expected plea. Amgen in October 2011 said it had taken a $780 million charge to settle a probe into allegedly illegal sales and marketing practices. . . .
