Allergan aims to widen migraine treatment with MAP Pharma buy

(Reuters) – U. S. specialty drugmaker Allergan Inc said late on Tuesday that it would buy MAP Pharmaceuticals Inc for about $958 million in cash, an acquisition intended to widen its presence in the treatment of adult migraines. MAP Pharmaceuticals is developing Levadex, an orally inhaled drug for the acute treatment of migraines in adults. Levadex is currently under review by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, which is set to make a decision about the drug around April 15. . . .

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Americans on Tuesday marked the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, even as battles over the contentious issue have largely shifted from the federal courts to statehouses. Dozens of protesters braved frigid temperatures to gather in front of the Supreme Court on the anniversary of the landmark January 22, 1973, Roe v. Wade ruling that made abortion legal in the first three months of pregnancy. With a companion ruling, the decision declared abortion a constitutional right. . . .

Novartis wins EU backing for first meningitis B vaccine

ZURICH (Reuters) – Novartis clinched European approval for the first vaccine against meningitis B, and will seek to sell the drug as soon as possible. "Novartis is working with health authorities to provide access to Bexsero as soon as possible," the Swiss drugmaker said in a statement on Tuesday. There is currently no approved vaccine offering broad protection against "MenB," this particular type of meningitis. Novartis won a European panel backing for Bexsero in November. . . .
