U. S. military veteran suicides rise, one dies every 65 minutes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The most extensive study yet by the U. S. government on suicide among military veterans shows more veterans are killing themselves than previously thought, with 22 deaths a day – or one every 65 minutes, on average. The study released on Friday by the Department of Veterans Affairs covered suicides from 1999 to 2010 and compared with a previous, less precise VA estimate that there were roughly 18 veteran deaths a day in the United States. More than 69 percent of veteran suicides were among individuals aged 50 years or older, the VA reported. . . .

U. S. rushing treatment for Brazil fire victims

SAO PAULO (Reuters) – The U. S. government is shipping emergency medical supplies to Brazil to treat survivors of a deadly nightclub fire who are suffering from exposure to cyanide gas released in the blaze, the Brazilian health ministry said on Friday. Officials say 119 people remain hospitalized after Sunday’s fire at the Kiss nightclub in southern Brazil that killed 236. Brazilian doctors have said cyanide was among the toxic chemicals produced when fire consumed the soundproofing foam on the club’s ceiling, contributing to the high number of fatalities. . . .

U. S. contraceptive proposed rules for religious nonprofits

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Obama administration laid out its blueprint for providing contraceptive coverage for employees at nonprofit religious organizations on Friday, proposing rules that would contain benefits within separate individual insurance plans without cost to the employer. Merck beats forecast, but issues cautious 2013 view

(Reuters) – Merck & Co’s quarterly results beat forecasts, helped by strong sales of its Januvia diabetes drug and Gardasil vaccine against cervical cancer, but the company issued a full-year 2013 profit view at the low end of Wall Street expectations The No. 2 U. S. drugmaker on Friday said it earned $1. 4 billion, or 46 cents per share, in the fourth quarter. That compared with $1. 51 billion, or 49 cents per share, in the year-earlier period, when the company took charges for acquisition and restructuring expenses. Report warns of U. S. state inactivity on consumer health reforms

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Only 11 of the 50 U. S. states have moved to implement new consumer safeguards under President Barack Obama’s healthcare law, raising questions about how major health insurance reforms will be enforced, a report released on Friday says. The report by the nonpartisan Commonwealth Fund found 39 states have yet to pass laws or issue regulations on seven reforms, including coverage for people with preexisting medical conditions, a ban on coverage waiting periods and limits for out-of-pocket consumer costs. . . .
