Diets lean on meat and rich in healthy fats like olive oil were most effective at promoting weight loss and lowering blood sugar among people with diabetes in a review of evidence from the last 10 years. Benefits were also seen with diets low in carbohydrates, high in protein or low in simple sugars. “If you look at different types of diets, these four can improve various aspects of diabetes control,” lead author Dr. Olubukola Ajala, a diabetes specialist at Western Sussex Hospitals in the UK, told Reuters Health. GSK promises growth this year after 2012 shortfall

LONDON (Reuters) – GlaxoSmithKline, Britain’s biggest drugmaker, renewed its promise to return to growth this year, after failing to deliver a hoped-for sales and margin recovery in 2012. GSK also announced a restructuring of European operations, drug manufacturing and research, designed to save at least 1 billion pounds ($1. 57 billion) annually by 2016, while it placed its Lucozade and Ribena drinks brands under strategic review. GSK promises to publish detailed drug trial data

LONDON (Reuters) – British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, which paid $3 billion last year to settle charges that it gave misleading information on its medicines, said on Tuesday it would publish more of its clinical research data. When the company agreed to the fines last July, government officials called it the largest healthcare fraud case in U. S. history, involving Glaxo drugs such as the antidepressant Paxil and diabetes pill Avandia. Other firms have also reached settlement deals and the industry has come under growing pressure from campaign groups to release all their clinical trial data. . . .

Sanofi says Zaltrap approved in Europe for colorectal cancer

PARIS (Reuters) – French drugmaker Sanofi said on Tuesday that its Zaltrap drug had been approved for marketing in the European Union to treat metastatic colorectal cancer. The approval came after a recent late-stage study of the drug showed significant improvement in survival among patients with colon cancer.
