Two infected with bird flu in southwest China

BEIJING (Reuters) – Two people in southwest China have tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus and are critically ill, state news agency Xinhua said on Sunday, citing the Chinese health ministry. A 21-year-old woman and 31-year-old man in Guiyang had tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus on Sunday after developing symptoms on February 2 and February 3 respectively, Xinhua cited health authorities as saying. “They are in critical condition and medical workers are carrying out emergency treatment,” the health ministry was quoted as saying. . . .

Soccer-Gascoigne in intensive care for monitoring, Mabbutt says

LONDON, Feb 10 (Reuters) – Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne, who is being treated for alcohol addiction in a United States clinic, has been moved to a hospital intensive care unit but should be able to resume rehabilitation treatment soon, his ex-team mate Gary Mabbutt said on Sunday. “Unfortunately Paul had a very bad reaction to the detox and the clinic decided that as a precaution it was best to transfer him to hospital. . . where he went into intensive care so they could monitor him 24/7,” Mabbutt told Sky Sports. . . .

PARIS/LONDON (Reuters) – The French and British governments promised on Saturday to punish those found responsible for selling horsemeat in beef products at the heart of a growing scandal that started in Britain but is quickly spreading to France. French Consumer Affairs Minister Benoit Hamon said an investigation had found that the horsemeat had originated in Romania, although there were links with French, Dutch and Cypriot firms and a factory in Luxembourg. . . .

Electricity, water restored to flood-hit Mozambique

CHOKWE, Mozambique (Reuters) – Electricity and water were restored to the flood-hit town of Chokwe in southern Mozambique and residents will be returned to their houses shortly, authorities said on Friday. But some low-lying areas will be closed off permanently to avoid repeats of the fatal floods which have killed 105 people and left more than 140,000 homeless since October. “People who cannot go back to their homes, will be relocated to safer zones within the same district at no cost,” said Rita Almeida, a spokeswoman for the National Institute of Calamity Management (INGC). . . .
