Court grants Indiana employer relief from contraceptives mandate

(Reuters) – An Indiana company has won temporary court relief from having to provide its employees with coverage for contraceptives and other birth-control procedures, as mandated under the 2010 healthcare overhaul. By a 2-1 vote, a panel of the 7th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago issued an injunction pending appeal in favor of the Grote family, whose Grote Industries makes vehicle safety systems and has more than 1,100 full-time workers. . . .

Judge overturns Arizona law barring Planned Parenthood funding

PHOENIX (Reuters) – A federal judge has overturned an Arizona law that sought to block funding through the state for Planned Parenthood’s healthcare clinics because the group also performs abortions. U. S. District Court Judge Neil Wake ruled that the controversial measure signed into law last May by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, a Republican, unlawfully robs individuals on Medicaid of the ability to choose healthcare services. . . .

Nigeria arrests journalists over polio worker killings

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) – Three Nigerian journalists have been arrested for inciting violence by saying on a radio show that polio immunisations were an anti-Islam Western conspiracy, just days before health workers administering the vaccines were killed. Gunmen on motorbikes shot dead the nine health workers in two separate attacks in Nigeria’s main northern city of Kano on Friday. No one claimed responsibility but Islamist militant group Boko Haram, a sect that has condemned the use of Western education, has been blamed for carrying out a spate of assaults on security forces in the city. . . .

No horsemeat fraud committed in Romania, PM says

(Reuters) – Romania’s prime minister said on Monday any fraud over horsemeat sold as beef had not happened in his country and he was angered by suggestions it might have been. The French and British governments have vowed to punish those found responsible for allowing horsemeat originating from Romania to be sold as beef. The British unit of frozen foods group Findus began recalling its beef lasagne last week on advice from its French supplier, Comigel, which said the questionable meat came from Romania. . . .

FDA rebuff deals big blow to Novo Nordisk’s U. S. hopes

S. regulators dealt a major blow to Novo Nordisk’s hopes for its new long-acting insulin Tresiba by demanding the Danish drugmaker conduct additional clinical tests to assess potential heart risks.
