CHELYABINSK, Russia (Reuters) – Thousands of Russian emergency workers went out on Saturday to clear up the damage from a meteor that exploded over the Ural mountains, damaging buildings, shattering windows and showering people with broken glass. Divers searched a lake near the city of Chelyabinsk, where a hole several feet wide had opened in the ice, but had so far failed to find any large fragments, officials said. . . .

U. S. files fraud case against former congressman Jesse Jackson Jr

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Prosecutors filed criminal charges of fraud and conspiracy on Friday against former Chicago congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. , accusing him and an unnamed co-conspirator of misusing $750,000 in campaign funds. Though Jackson, the son of the famed civil rights leader, did not immediately enter any plea, his lawyers released a statement from him admitting mistakes as the charges were filed in U. S. District Court in Washington. "I offer no excuses for my conduct and I fully accept my responsibility for the improper decisions and mistakes I have made," said Jackson, a Democrat. . . .

Venezuela publishes first photos of Chavez since surgery

CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuela published the first photos of cancer-stricken Hugo Chavez since his surgery in Cuba more than two months ago, showing him smiling while lying in bed reading a newspaper, flanked by his two daughters. The government said on Friday that the 58-year-old president was still suffering respiratory problems after a lung infection, and that he was breathing through a tracheal tube. Chavez had not been seen in public, and has still not been heard from, since the operation on December 11, his fourth surgery for a cancer in his pelvic region first diagnosed in mid-2011. . . .

Australian court supports patents on human genes

CANBERRA (Reuters) – An Australian court ruled on Friday that two technology companies could hold a patent on genetic material related to cancer, in a case similar to one before the U. S. Supreme Court that has implications for gene-based medicine worldwide. Cancer support groups said the finding could stifle new breast cancer research and treatment.
