PRAGUE (Reuters) – Czech inspectors have found horsemeat in meatballs made in Sweden for IKEA Group, the world’s biggest furniture retailer, the Czech food regulator said on Monday. The checks were carried out in response to a European-wide scandal that erupted last month when tests carried out in Ireland revealed some beef products also contained horsemeat. It has triggered recalls of ready meals and damaged confidence in Europe’s vast and complex food industry. . . .

Pediatricians oppose school suspension, expulsion

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – A group representing pediatricians says disciplining students with out-of-school suspension or expulsion is counterproductive to school goals and should only be used on case by case basis. The policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that pediatricians familiarize themselves with the policies of their local school districts, and advocate for prevention and alternative strategies. “The adverse effect of out-of-school suspension and expulsion on the student can be profound,” the experts write in the journal Pediatrics on Monday. . . .

Cochlear implants aid adults with hearing loss: study

(Reuters) – Cochlear implants can improve speech and quality of life in adults with severe hearing loss – and two implants seem to work better than one, according to a U. S. analysis of past research. The study, which appeared in JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, included 42 studies that compared hearing, speech and quality of life in eligible adults before and after they received a cochlear implant or compared having one versus two functioning implants. White House directs open access for government research

Affymax, Takeda recall anemia drug Omontys after deaths

TOKYO (Reuters) – U. S. Affymax Inc. and Japan’s Takeda Pharmaceutical Co said they are voluntarily recalling all lots of anemia treatment Omontys (peginesatide) in the U. S. , due to reports of serious hypersensitivity reactions, including some deaths. As of Sunday, fatal reactions to the injection have been reported in approximately 0. 02 percent of 25,000 patients after receiving their initial injection of the treatment, Affymax said in a statement. France’s Hollande hails quality meat at farm show

PARIS (Reuters) – French President Francois Hollande sang the praises of local produce at the annual French farm show, where the horse meat scandal added to French cattle breeders’ downbeat mood. Hollande, who was long the head of the rural Correze region, spent hours talking to livestock farmers, who worry that the discovery of horse meat in lasagnas and other processed foods labeled as beef-based will cast another cloud over their sector. Horsemeat with banned drug entered French food chain

PARIS (Reuters) – Meat from three horse carcasses contaminated with a banned drug has entered the human food chain in France but there is no danger to the public, the French farm minister said on Saturday. The meat, which came from a lot of six British carcasses exported to France, contained traces of phenylbutazone – known as bute – an anti-inflammatory painkiller for sporting horses, banned for animals intended for eventual human consumption. Italy finds no trace of horse DNA in Nestle mince meals

ROME/ZURICH (Reuters) – Italy’s Health Ministry said on Saturday that tests had found no trace of horse DNA in minced beef meals by Swiss food giant Nestle that were removed from sale on Monday.
