Dreamliner probe widens after excess battery voltage ruled out

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U. S. safety investigators on Sunday ruled out excess voltage as the cause of a battery fire this month on a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner jet operated by Japan Airlines Co (JAL) and said they were expanding the probe to look at the battery’s charger and the jet’s auxiliary power unit. Last week, governments across the world grounded the Dreamliner while Boeing halted deliveries after a problem with a lithium-ion battery on a second 787 plane, flown by All Nippon Airways Co (ANA), forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in western Japan. . . .

Asian shares retreat from highs, yen volatile before BOJ

TOKYO (Reuters) – Asian shares pulled back from multimonth highs on Monday, while the yen firmed after touching a new low in choppy trade ahead of a Bank of Japan policy decision that is expected to deliver bold monetary easing measures. The MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged down 0. 2 percent despite pockets of strength in Australia, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Japan government, Bank of Japan “getting closer” on monetary policy statement

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese Economics Minister Akira Amari said on Sunday that the government and the Bank of Japan were getting closer to an agreement on a joint statement on monetary policy expected to be issued next week. The government has been pressuring the BOJ to adopt a 2 percent inflation target and make job creation part of its monetary policy mandate. Weidmann says ECB is not the only crisis manager: paper

(Reuters) – Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann warned against relying on the European Central Bank as the only crisis manager, telling a Finnish newspaper that its bond buyback program me was risky. "Central banks in recent years have been pulled into the role of a crisis manager. Some think that central banks are the only able ones. I consider this thinking wrong and dangerous," Weidmann, also ECB Governing Council member, told Helsingin Sanomat in an interview. Caterpillar writes off most of China deal after fraud

(Reuters) – Caterpillar Inc uncovered "deliberate, multi-year, coordinated accounting misconduct" at a subsidiary of a Chinese company it acquired last summer, leading it to write off most of the value of the deal and wiping out more than half its expected earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012. Boeing probe focuses on battery, 787 deliveries halted

SEATTLE/TAKAMATSU, Japan (Reuters) – U. S. and Japanese aviation safety officials finished an initial investigation of a badly damaged battery from a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner jet on Friday as Boeing said it was halting deliveries until the battery concerns were resolved. Boeing said it would continue building the carbon-composite 787, but deliveries were on hold until the U. S. Federal Aviation Administration approved and implemented a plan to ensure the safety of potentially flammable lithium-ion batteries that prompted a widespread grounding of the new airplane this week. . . .
