Boo! Cameroon Court Imprisons Man For Gay Text Message!
We tend to take our freedoms for granted in America. But imagine being arrested just for sending a text message. Not a threat or bullying or even a dick pic- just a benign message of love. Well, that’s what Jean-Claude Roger Mbede is facing. After texting another man “I’m very much in love with you”, he was imprisoned for 18 months. Jean-Claude was only released on a provisional basis after equal rights activists protested his poor treatment. But now, sadly, the court has ruled he is to go back to prison to finish out his term. Jean-Claude says:”I am going back to the dismal conditions that got me critically ill before I was temporarily released for medical reasons. I am not sure I can put up with the anti-gay attacks and harassment I underwent at the hands of fellow inmates and prison authorities on account of my perceived and unproven sexual orientation. The justice system in this country is just so unfair. “Perhaps it’s Jean-Claude’s English, but we think don’t think “unfair” does justice to the injustice in Cameroon. Last year twelve people were sentenced to prison for the “crime” of homosexuality. [Image via Amnesty International. ]
