Box Office: “Taken 2” Steals Top Spot from “Hotel Transylvania”
Spearheading another solid weekend at movie theaters across the States, “Taken 2” is comfortable situated atop the box office to begin the weekend of October 5-7, 2012. The Olivier Megaton directed crime drama starring Liam Neeson as a retired CIA operative scored a $17. 5 million opening day while estimated to churn out a respectable weekend total of $46. 3 million. Getting bumped down a peg is last weekend’s top dog, “Hotel Transylvania,” as Sony Pictures Animation’s family comedy starring Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez sits in the runner-up slot with a $6. 2 million Friday putting it in line for a sophomore weekend of $24. 8 million. Filling out the top five at the box office in earmarked earnings are the Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow starring musical production “Pitch Perfect” ($12. 8 million) in third and Tim Burton and Disney’s animated newcomer “Frankenweenie” ($12. 5 million) in fourth while the Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Emily Blunt helmed sci-fi thriller “Looper” ($11. 2 million) rounds out the projected top five finishers this weekend.
