++ As Mexico marked the 72nd anniversary of the oil expropriation in 1938, Petróleos Mexicanos, Pemex, announced that two new groups of oil fields had been discovered in the Gulf of Mexico that would permit the addition of an extra two billion barrels to the country’s total hydrocarbon reserves. ++ At the event to celebrate the 1938 petroleum expropriation, President Felipe Calderón said that transforming Pemex into one of the best companies in the world is a commitment by all Mexicans. ++ Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano, son of the man who ordered the oil expropriation in 1938, then-president Lázaro Cárdenas, called for all risk contracts to be made public, to be certain that they do not violate the law. ++ President Felipe Calderón’s labor reform proposal reached the Chamber of Deputies… PAN deputy Gerardo de los Cobos said the draft bill intends to strengthen the country’s working class by creating jobs and competiveness. ++ Los Pinos confirmed that President Felipe Calderón would visit Washington on May 19-20, on an invitation from U. S. President Barack Obama. ++ The U. S. government rejected the notion that Mexico’s institutions are in danger because of the drug traffickers’ onslaught and said that what is occurring is a specific kind of violence affecting only one part of the country. ++ Senate Speaker Carlos Navarrete said lawmakers are reviewing the time for Congress to decide how much longer the Army should be in the front line of the fight against organized crime. ++ Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard urged the federal government to alter strategy against narcotics trafficking, especially in Ciudad Juárez, where the focus should be public policies favoring young people… Otherwise, he warned, the spiral of violence would continue…
