++ Speaking in Nuevo León Interior Secretary Fernando Gómez Mont acknowledged that two students from the Tecnológico de Monterrey technological institute were killed outside the campus in the cross fire during a shootout between armed groups and the Mexican Army. Gómez Mont pledged to carry out an in-depth investigation into the deaths of the students and sent his condolences to their families. Later Gómez Mont traveled to Reynosa to meet with the Tamaulipas security cabinet as well as mayors from that state. ++ The National Human Rights Commission condemned the deaths of the two students at the Tec de Monterrey and said they occurred because of a lack of coordination, planning and strategy in public security. ++ In other news, two students from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara were killed in the town of Marcos Castellanos during festivities for the local patron saint. ++ Mexico’s Ambassador to the United States Arturo Sarukhán said that security and progress in the Mérida Initiative would be the key issues to be discussed during this week’s cabinet security meeting in the United States. ++ The president of the Inter-American Development Bank Luis Alberto Moreno gave his support to Mexico’s efforts fighting organized crime… In remarks made in Cancún, Moreno said that Mexico must continue with its security strategy as well as maintain regional cooperation. ++ Mexican President Felipe Calderón admitted that there are serious risks to the recovery of the Mexican economy that he attributed to the lack of monetary and fiscal reforms in developed countries. ++ The nation’s top court postponed a discussion on 12 legal protection measures or amparos filed by banks against sentences that ordered them to pay millions for deposits they received in the 1980s.
