++ Up to 50,000 people may have been killed in the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday according to the International Red Cross… Massive international aid was flowing into the Caribbean nation, stunned by a natural disaster that politicians and regular citizens alike were still struggling to understand… Tens of thousands of people lost their homes, hundreds of people were injured and up to 80 percent of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince may have been destroyed. The first Mexican planes carrying humanitarian aid, rescue teams, doctors and volunteers as well as potable water plants and vehicles to help in the rescue efforts took off from the Mexico City airport heading for Port-au-Prince. The Mexican government confirmed the death of a Mexican woman who was in Haiti when the earthquake struck… The Foreign Relations Secretariat said 10 Mexican nationals in Haiti who asked for help were evacuated and were already a Mexican Navy plane heading back home…++ Speaking about Mexico’s economic recovery Felipe Calderón said his government acts responsibly to find long-term solutions that go beyond political interests. ++ Senate speaker Carlos Navarrete, of the PRD, challenged conservative PAN party to carry out a national poll on the hikes to fuels… Navarrete said the conservative party is organizing a survey on same-sex marriage in Mexico City so it might as well conduct a national survey on the fuel issue…++ The Finance Secretariat said that freezing or lowering gasoline and diesel rates would mean prices would still be below international rates and harm public finances. ++ The Mexican Electricians Union agreed to attend a meeting at the Interior Secretariat minus its main leaders… But the union said its members would go to the meeting not to negotiate, but to obtain a “solid agreement” to allow 44,000 former workers at the Compañía de Luz y Fuerza del Centro utility to get their jobs back. ++ Officials attending a bilateral security meeting between Mexico and the United States in El Paso, Texas, agreed that the Mexican Army should halt patrols in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua.
