Pay Up And He’ll Stay
With Howard Stern’s Sirius XM Radio deal coming to an end later this year, the funny man is using this time to try and negotiate a new contract.
Howard’s being pretty smart about it too, making sure to mention it publicly.
Just last month, he mentioned being approached by terrestrial radio and even getting offers. And Clear Channel Communications is interested in Stern as well.
However, Stern’s current contract gave him $500 MILLION(!!!!!) for a five year deal.
And with Sirius XM’s stock as low as it is, and the economy as bad as it is, who’s really going to have the money to pay him the big bucks for a new show?
But Sirius XM does want him to stay. Says Sirius chief Mel Karmazin:
“In this world of fragmentation, content prevails. Howard Stern is great content. Howard would be sought-after by anyone. He’s a great talent. Having said that, we would like him to stay with us, and we are optimistic he will continue to do so. ”
Yea, if he takes a paycut maybe.
And Clear Channel Radio CEO John Hogan has publicly admitted that Stern would be a great fit for his company. Adding that Clear Channel is “the most logical company for (Stern) to optimize his exposure and financial return. ”
Money talks. And if Clear Channel can outbid Sirius, we have a feeling Stern will make the move.
