++ PRI senators announced that their priority in the next legislative session would not be political reform proposed by the president, but rather comprehensive fiscal reform that does not imply more taxes. PRD Senate caucus leader Carlos Navarrete said his party and the PAN could form an alliance to approve political reform in the next legislative period starting on Monday. The chairman of the Business Coordinating Council Armando Paredes charged that political interests linked to elections are blocking approval of State reform. Concanaco backed a proposal made by PRI Senate caucus leader Manlio Fabio Beltrones to lower the Value Added Tax or IVA to 12 percent and the income tax or ISR to 25 percent. ++ The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office announced it will call in brothers Ramón and Simón Charaf Medina, owners of the Bar Bar private club, to testify in the case of the attack on football player Salvador Cabañas. ++ The Attorney General’s Office denied political interests lie behind its decision to challenge same-sex marriages before the nation’s Supreme Court. Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard called the decision by the Attorney General’s Office to challenge the constitutionality of same-sex marriages a serious error since it impinges on the city’s competence. The Mexico City Human Rights Commission said the Attorney General’s Office move to challenge gay marriages undermines human rights. ++ In a speech at the Davos World Economic Forum President Felipe Calderón accused G-20 governments of failing to keep their pledge not to turn to protectionism to cope with the economic crisis.
