A cold wind swept past Norm Sterzenbach as he left his home on Feb. 8, 1988, climbed into his car and steered down an icy road to attend Iowa’s Democratic presidential caucuses.

The longtime activist joined about 150 people that night in the Kenwood Elementary School gymnasium in Cedar Rapids.
